Obituary.
Sir. J. H. Thornton.
Surgeon-General. Sir James Howard Thornton whose death took place on January 6 on the eve of his 85th birthday, was the youngest son of the late major John Thornton, 78th Regiment. He was educated at Chatham House, Ramsgate, and Kings College, London, graduating B.A. in 1854 and M.B. in 1885, and a Fellow of King's College London, in 1898. he entered the Indian Medical Service, in which his life was spent and in which he rose to the rank of Deputy-Surgeon-General. He served during the Indian Mutiny, the China war, and was wounded in action in the Khasia and Jynkia Hills campaign. In the Suakin and Hargara expeditions he occupied the post of Chief Medical Officer. He was five times mentioned in dispatches and received four medals with seven clasps. He also received the Khedive's Star, and in 1885 the C.B. he was created K.C.B. in 1904. His book "Memories of Seven Campaigns" was well known. In 1861 he married Mary, daughter of the late J. Astor, of Jersey.
