She was born Feb. 20, 1933, in Montell to James Henry and Eve Wells. After graduating from Uvalde High School in 1950, she attended New Mexico Highlands University from 1951 to 1954, received a scholarship in 1952 for outstanding art major and won the Kappa Pi Fraternity Honorary Art award from the Alpha Alpha Sigma Chapter. She was nominated for Teacher of the Year in 1976-77 and received an honorary life membership in the Parent Teachers Association from the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers in May 1980. She retired from teaching in 1990. Even while teaching full time, she owned and managed a ranch, raising horses, cattle, sheep and goats, family members said. She was a lifetime member of The American Quarter Horse Association, a member of The Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and was a sponsor for a local rodeo club.
With all these activities, family members noted that she still found time to be a loving wife and mother, raising two children. She is survived by her husband of 14 years, Robert Pendley; one son, Sam Owens of Hamilton; one daughter, Eva Owens of Austin; one sister, Carolyn Costner of Bridgeport, Texas; and one brother, James H. Wells of Schertz.
