Obituary as Winifred ‘Wini’ Rizzo, 85, of Yreka, passed away at the Madrone Hospice House in Yreka on Nov. 19, 2008 after a 23-year battle with osteoporosis. Wini was born on Dec. 23, 1922 in Lancaster, Calif. to John and Blodwin Duhart. She enjoyed growing up on the Fairmont family ranch with her sister and two brothers. Wini attended Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster graduating in 1940. She married her high school sweetheart, Buzz Pendley, in 1942. During WW II Wini was employed by Polaris Flight Academy, a training facility for Army Air Force pilots. The family moved to Siskiyou County in 1958 where they owned and operated the 3J Ranch in the Bogus area. In 1963, Wini, with her son, Bucky and daughter, Debby, moved to Yreka where she found employment with the Siskiyou County Probation Department. It was there that Wini met Frank Rizzo. They were married in 1965 and enjoyed 34 years together before Frank’s death in 1999. During that time Wini and Frank operated a small Italian café in Yreka. “Rizzo’s Pizzos” was a favorite lunch spot with the courthouse crowd. Wini had a 21-year career with Siskiyou County, working in various departments until her retirement from the Welfare Department in 1984.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank N. Rizzo; her son, Bucky Pendley; her sister, Juanita Daugherty and her brother, John S. Duhart. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Roland and Pat Duhart of Lancaster; her daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Mike Whipple of Yreka; step-sons, Louis Rizzo of Redding and Jim Rizzo of Sacramento; daughter-in-law, Judy Wood of Chico; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dewey and Josie Rizzo of Weed; grandchildren, Spencer and Val Pendley of Durham, Nick Pendley of Chico, Holly and Bryan Parker of Durham, Erin Whipple of Citrus Heights, Kayla Whipple of San Francisco, Jeff Rizzo of Redding and Dan Rizzo of Sacramento; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
