Pendley Families and Individuals Maine 1-7-08

“This file contains the known, so far, descendents (plus their other relatives) of Joseph Penley who emigrated from England to Maine shortly before the start of the Revolutionary War. The start and large bulk of this file is taken from a manuscript written by the late Robert Irving Penley titled “The Penley Family of England and America”. I believe that it was written in the 1950’s and 1960’s based on multiple correspondence with members of his family as well as his own research. The manuscript was written on a typewriter as an original with 2 carbon copies. One of the carbon copies was sent to the Library of Congress and I believe that the other one was sent to a public library in Robert’s home town in Maine. I have no idea where the original now resides. Numerous others have added portions to this file and I have added a little information from census and other data. The bulk of the information, whether from Robert or from the others seems to deal more with the who, and the to whom rather than when, where, and what were the sources and what did they say. The source information that we do have is located in the notes. As in all of the files, the surname spelling varies from person to person and source to source. I have used the convention of Penley that Robert used and maintained it for indexing convenience. I apologize to any members of the family who may feel offended that their name spelling has been arbitrarily changed. By the nature of the program, individuals who we have listed as being born in the last 110 years, for whom we do not have a death date have their information blocked in order to comply with laws. Limited amounts of additional information can be provided to the immediate family or to researchers working to expand our knowledge. The document remains a work in progress and I would gladly welcome any additional information or volunteers who would be willing to help research and document this important family. I suspect that well over half of the available information has not yet been captured and put in this file.”
