Where did the Pendley Family originate?

To me, this is the $64 question. ($64 question #2, How did my line get to North Carolina and from where ever they landed on this side of the "Big Pond"?)  At present there are four candidates.  The ancient village of Pendley in Hertfordshire Co., Pendle Hill in Lancashire Co., Penally in Pembrokeshire Co., Wales and Cornwall.  It very well could have been all four.  Perhaps our ancestors lived in the Village of Pendley until it was sacked by Sir Robert Whittingham in 1440.  Then they may have moved to any one or all three of the other towns before taking the "big leap".

We know that one William Pendley (or more) came from Cornwall.  I don't believe he was the only Pendley to come over.  We need to know the information about all the Pendleys and Allied Family members that came over.  Hopefully, one day we will have the answers to these questions.  We may know them now and I'm not aware of them.

Until we know the answers to these questions, lets get busy searching for the answers!  If you find any of this answers, clue me in and send them my way.

Pendley Origin

Pen is from the Celtic work hill or head, (800BC - 400 AD).   Ley is from the Saxon work clearing (350AD - 1000AD).  My humble opinion is that the name Pendley came from the ancient village of Pendley which was probably named after the Mercian King Penda.  Penda's Clearing.  Therefore, the Celtic word Pen for hill, doesn't apply.

First Generation Pendleys

1.  The first William Pendley came from Cornwall in the 1600s.

2.  "Jonathan Pendley came from Cornwall, England to Rutherford County, North Carolina and brought nine boys and two girls about the year 1700."

Copy of a letter written by George Pendley, Nortonville, KY., July 9, 1907 to John Pendley. (Original letter in possession of Mrs. M. E. Sedberry 109 S. Jackson , San Angelo, Texas)

"Well John I seen Henry the other day ___________. Henry ways according to his information Jonathan Pendley came from Cornwall, England to Rutherford County, North Carolina and brought nine boys and two girls about the year 1700. He was Henry’s great grandpa and he don’t know any of their names except JAMES, his grandpa and he came to Barren County about 1780. He raised 12 children, 10 boys and two girls. He came to Butler County about 1804. He married Moness Smith. Grandpa married Nancy Childress about 1818 and raised 8 children. Grandpa had nine brothers and two sisters, Alfred, Joseph, Austin, Larkin, Solomon, Levi, Smith, James, Billie and Ben. Grandpa marriied about 1814. He was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina. His children were Lavina, Ben, Meredith, Isaac, Mahala, Sally, Henry, Harison. Grandpa died June 19, 1874. Grandma died January 2, 1862. This is partly guesswork with Henry. I close.

George Pendley"

NOTE: The grandpa in the last paragraph is Joseph Pendley, see Butler County marriages, and census giving names of children which fit the names given here.
